Jamie Foxx was recently interviewed by Kam Williams from BlackNews.com. Check out the interview below.
Kam Williams: Hi Jamie, thanks for the interview.
Jamie Foxx: Hey, man, thank you, brother.
KW: It’s been awhile. The last time we spoke you were filming Law Abiding Citizen in Philly. In fact, we talked on the same day that you had to beat up that intruder who broke into your hotel room.
JF: Well, let’s hope that it doesn’t happen like that again.
KW: I have a lot of questions for you from fans, so why don’t I get right to them? Children’s book author Irene Smalls asks: What interested you in producing this film? Is your sponsorship of this type of documentary a direction you plan to continue in? Do you have other projects like this in development?
JF: What interested me was the fact that the story had a huge music component, since I have my own fond memories of playing in a stage band when I was a kid. And then I also liked the movie’s eloquent and touching storyline which flowed as if it had been scripted, even though it’s a documentary. You have the band getting back together for the first time in 30 years for a reunion concert, and then Prof’s ending up transitioning right after the event. It’s a beautiful film, and I just wanted to make sure that everybody was aware of it.
Jamie Foxx was on Jay Leno last night to promote new documentary he produced, Thunder Soul. He also talked about horoscopes, his upcoming movie Django Unchained and his daughter. Make sure to watch the interview below.
Jamie Foxx isn’t in “Thunder Soul,” but he plans to be its most vocal ambassador.
The stirring documentary tracks the reunion of 30 members of the stage band of the predominantly African-American Kashmere High School in Houston as they reconnect for a tribute concert for their former teacher, 92-year-old Conrad O. Johnson.
Many of them haven’t picked up an instrument in decades and it’s touching watching them struggle to remember the old chords and coordinated dance moves, all to honor the man they affectionately called “Prof.”
Though Foxx hails from Texas, he was just a kid when Prof and the Kashmere Stage Band were making national headlines from the late-’60s to mid-’70s for being anything but a typical school band. Their powerhouse funk performances – many of their songs were original Prof compositions — led to live appearances in Europe and Japan and, in 1972, Kashmere won the All-American High School Stage Band Festival in Mobile, Ala., while segregationist George Wallace was state governor.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has teamed with Roadside Attractions, distributor of the new documentary, Thunder Soul, presented and executive produced by Jamie Foxx. In a new public service announcement (PSA), Foxx promotes the film while asking the public to support Big Brothers Big Sisters’ quality mentoring programs, which are proven to help children overcome adversity to beat the odds.
Thunder Soul follows alumni of Houston’s Kashmere High School Stage Band, who return home after 35 years to perform a tribute concert for their 92-year-old beloved bandleader, teacher and mentor, Conrad “Prof” Johnson. Transforming the school’s struggling jazz band into a world-class 1970s funk powerhouse, Prof served as an extraordinary role model to his students.

After recieving rave reviews during its 2010’s SXSW debut, the film attracted Foxx who is now the executive producer of the project. The film is scheduled to be nationally released later this year.
